Flash to Howell Cobb pertain to the sale of the MACON TELEGRAPH. Two letters of particular interest: dated Richmond, July 24, 1861, "Dear Wife," signed "Howell Cobb," regarding battle and people killed in battle; dated Athens, June 15, 1861, "Dear Brother," signed "Thomas R. R. Cobb," regarding formation of a legion. Correspondence after 1868 mainly regards Mary Ann Cobb and social life in Georgia.

The collection consists of approximately 250 letters from E.A. Nisbet to Amanda Battle before and after their 1825 marriage. There are a few letters from their children and their friends. Although Nisbet's letters deal mainly with family matters, he also discusses politics and fellow politicians, especially while in Washington, D.C. The collection also includes two framed oil portraits and a pecan desk chair. One of the paintings is of Amanda Battle, dated 1841, and with the frame is 36 1/2" x 32," the other is of E.A. Nisbet and is 20 1/4" x 17". The chair, which has a carved back with four spindles and an upholstered seat, belonged to Amanda Nisbet.

The Jack Leigh collection contains an array of material covering both Leigh's personal and professional life. The collection includes photographs, negatives, slides, audio tapes, video tapes, journals, notebooks, appointment books, schedules, letters, printed material, correspondence/subject files, material relating to his published books, financial papers, legal documents, medical and insurance papers, and other items. The professional photographs include work prints, contact prints, and fine art prints. Subjects range from Southern landscapes, coastal scenes, rural and agricultural scenes and interiors to people in family groups, social gatherings, and in various recreational and occupational activities. Many of the images are ones that were used in his published books. The negatives include 35mm, 4x5, and medium format and are arranged by date (in most cases the first 2 digits of the negative number indicate the year it was made). Papers relating to his books include research material, notes, drafts, proofs, correspondence, photographs, promotional material, reviews, and other items. The legal material in the collection includes papers concerning his litigation with Warner Brothers as well as a few other copyright infringement cases. Personal material in the collection includes letters, photographs, journals, notebooks, printed matter, and some of his parents papers which include letters, albums, scrapbooks, diaries, writings, and genealogical material.

This collection contains the papers of Rebecca L. Griggs, a student of Reverend I. R. Branham's Private Academy for Young Ladies in Eatonton, Georgia from during the mid-19th century. Most of the collection is comprised of Rebecca's letters home to her mother about school and social activities. Other correspondence includes invitations to social events, a love letter from a suitor named D. T. Singleton, a letter from her cousin Fannie Holt about Rebecca's upcoming marriage, and a letter from Rebecca to her husband. There are also a few receipts and visiting cards.

The collection consists of the papers of the Hillyer family from 1805-1990 with the bulk between 1805-1874. Materials from the early years (1805-1819) pertain to Shaler Hillyer and consist of a letter and account book describing Petersburg, Elbert County, Georgia. The collection contains a memoir written by Junius Hillyer describing life on his family's plantation, slavery, the family's move to Athens, Georgia (1821), Junius' attendance at grammar school, descriptions of and activities at Franklin College (University of Georgia). Also includes photocopies of letters from William Dickerson and Peter Wellborn Martin, friends of the Hillyers; materials pertaining to the publication of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE JUNIUS HILLYER; and dedication of a marker at the Freeman Hillyer homeplace in Popular Grove, Georgia.

Letters are from her father, James Rhind, while working in Savannah, Georgia; sisters, Liza Rose and Susan Barrett; brother, William Montgomery Rhind, while serving in Virginia; and husband, William Anthony Stokes, while serving in and near Atlanta, Georgia, and then Savannah. The collection also includes correspondence from Brig. Gen. William M. Gardner to William Montgomery Rhind; and a letter from Alfred M. The collection consists of over 150 oral history interviews. In 1939 and 1940 the W.P.A. workers went to the homes and businesses of men and women, both black and white, and asked them to tell about their lives and business experiences. The stories were written down in the words and dialect used. The stories were later edited, which included changing the real names of the persons mentioned and changing some of the titles. The majority of the persons interviewed lived in the Athens area. Some of those interviewed remembered the days of slavery and the Civil War. Others discussed their jobs, such as farmer, washwoman, principal, and insurance agent. All of the transcripts are photocopies.

The collection consists of correspondence, mainly from Daniel Butterfield Pease, to members of his family in Maine while serving with Company G of the 12th Maine Infantry Regiment from 1864-1866. Pease's letters were written from Camp Coburn, Maine; Galloups Island, Massachusetts; and Augusta, Savannah, and Thomasville, Georgia and contain descriptions of the different areas, his duties, the Civil War, and peace-keeping activities during Reconstruction. The collection consists of the personal papers of George J. Kollock and the Kollock family from 1815-1889. Early letters are addressed to George while he attended Round Hill Academy in Northampton, Massachusetts. Later letters include those to and from his wife, Susan; their children; and other family members. Most letters relate to family matters, day-to-day circumstances and living conditions, and travel between their home in Clarksville and Savannah. Of particular interest are letters from son, J.F. Kollock while attending Franklin College (now the University of Georgia); correspondence from E.H. (or F.) Campbell of Augusta, Georgia describing the yellow fever epidemic of 1854; and letters from W.P. Johnson and wife M.E., describing trips to Paris, France and Washington, D.C. describing the construction of the Smithsonian Institute and the Washington Monument.

The papers consists of correspondence, genealogical notes, photographs, and scrapbooks. The bulk of the correspondence (1866-1884), contains family letters to and from Joseph E. Brown; his wife, Elizabeth Grisham Brown; her parents Joseph Grisham and Mary L. Grisham; the Brown children, Mary V. Brown (Connally), Franklin Pierce Brown; and other relatives including uncle James Steele and cousin Mary E. Maxwell. The scrapbooks (46) contain a variety of materials including newsclippings and ephemera, some relating to Brown's political career, kept by various members of the Brown family.

The collection consists of a portion of the material given to the University of Georgia by the Georgia branch of the W.P.A. upon its termination in 1941. Most of the material in the collection was gathered from areas within the University of Georgia Libraries Special Collections Department, such as the Georgia Room vertical file and the Manuscripts Department. As one of the main purposes of the project was to preserve historical data relating to Georgia, the papers consist of transcribed legal documents, summaries of newspaper stories, personal interviews, and accounts of social and cultural events. The topics are extremely diverse, and represent only a sampling of the subjects covered by the project. The two main sections of the collection are the city and county files. Prominent in this area are several subheadings devoted to cultural concerns. These include sections covering Atlanta theater, arts, and a well documented section covering opera performances presented in Atlanta from 1866 through 1940. The county files document the establishment of each county in Georgia and include historic events and/or points of interest. Also included are a group of interviews with ex-slaves from around the state and two folders of general folklore relating to slavery. Another section of note includes colonial legal records (wills, deeds, receipts, etc.), but the records do extend into the mid 1800s. These records include transcriptions of Georgia House Journals, Executive Council Minutes, Governor's correspondence, Military affairs, Indian treaties, Indian depredation records, etc.

The collection consists of papers of Godfrey Barnsley and the Barnsley family from 1806-1903. The papers consist mainly of correspondence, letter books, and financial records. The correspondence (bulk 1828-1873) and letter books (1837-1873, with gaps) pertain to personal and business matters relating to Barnsley's occupation as a cotton factor and merchant. Correspondents include Barnsley's business partners John Day, William D. Duncan, John R. Gardner, Edmund M. Sager, and James Sager and family members including his wife Julia Scarborough Barnsley, his uncle George Barnsley of Liverpool, and his children. Many of the family letters were written from Woodlands Plantation in Bartow County, Georgia to Barnsley while he attended to business in Savannah (Ga.), Mobile (Ala.), and New Orleans (La.) and discuss family and plantation matters. Some of the correspondence relates to his position with the Port of Savannah as vice consul and interim of the Netherlands and vice consul for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The collection also contains transcripts of much of the correspondence.

The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of the Akehurst and Lines families from 1850-1914. The bulk of the correspondence contains letters between Jennie Akehurst, a teacher at Covington, Georgia and Sylvanus Lines of Fayetteville Georgia during their courtship (1857-1860) and married life (1861-1874). Topics discussed include family matters, life in Georgia, and news of relatives. Another portion of the correspondence consists of letters to and from Daisy Lines while teaching in Irvington, Georgia (1882-1898). Includes drafts of letters to and letters from Jerome Reneau, writing from Greene County, Alabama and Texas; correspondence to Jennie Lines; and correspondence from Daisy's aunt Anna Marie Akehurst Barham. Topics discussed include Reneau and Daisy's friendship, Reneau's farming in Alabama, social events, Daisy's teaching, and family news. The diaries were written by Jennie Akehurst Lines (1859-1861 and 1861-1871) and Anna Maria Akehurst Barham (1861-1871). Jennie's diary entries prior to 1861 mainly concern financial hardships and personal matters. Beginning in 1860, entries discuss the political climate, the 1860 election, abolitionists, and slavery. For 1861-1866, the diary contains information on Georgia's succession from the union, social life and living conditions during the Civil War, problems with slaves, and freedmen. Entries for 1866-1871 again mainly focus on personal matters. The Barham diary contains entries pertaining to the Female Orphans' Asylum (Macon, Ga.), where she was matron, the South's reaction to the Battle of Bull Run, economic and living conditions in Georgia during the Civil War, problems with Confederate currency, cotton planting both during and after the war, and problems hiring and supervising freedmen.

The bulk of the correspondence is to Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1820-1856) discussing politics, the 1840 presidential election, the Wilmont Proviso (dealing with slavery), legal cases, law practice, and Lumpkin's appointments. Major correspondents include John MacPherson Berrien, Howell Cobb, Ebenezer Staines, and Hiram Warner. The diary was written by Mary B. Thomas, a school girl in Forsyth, Georgia, who later married Edwin King Lumpkin. Written from June - August 1873, Thomas describes her friends, school, social and family life. The collection also contains bills, receipts, and correspondence relating to Colonel Thomas Carr, an ancestor of Lumpkin. The correspondence (1773-1837) describes the Louisiana territory, Saint Louis (Mo.), the War of 1812, politics, and family news.

Early records deal mainly with the Zachariah Lamar family and include deeds, bonds, land grants, receipts, slave bills of sale, and correspondence. The period 1811-1928 covers the Lamar, Cobb, and Erwin families and contains correspondence, both business and personal; bills; receipts; invitations; legal papers; telegrams; tax notices; postcards; case books; letterbooks; scrapbooks; account books; photographs; and genealogical and biographical information pertaining to the Cobb, Erwin, and Lamar families. Also includes information on the law practice and legal firms of the Cobb and Erwin families. Of particular interest are Howell Cobb's order books for the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment (Cobb's Brigade). The collection includes correspondence and material relating to the following family members: Zachariah Lamar, Howell Cobb, Mary Ann Lamar Cobb, John Addison Cobb, Sarah Robinson Rootes Cobb, Mary Ann Lamar Cobb Erwin, and Alexander S.
